Children's Liturgy of the Word is a program in which the Sunday scriptures are proclaimed and explained on a level appropriate for children in grades pre-K through 5th at the 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday Masses.
The program runs from September through May. Any child in this age group may participate—there is no registration necessary.
After the Opening Collect, the children gather with their leaders at the front of the altar and are sent forth by the presider. They process respectfully to the Chapel and begin with a brief opening prayer.
The children then listen to:
The First Reading, proclaimed from the Children’s Lectionary
The Psalm
The Gospel Acclamation
The Gospel
An age-appropriate reflection on the Scriptures follows, shared by the leader through stories, discussions, pictures, or whatever method best conveys the meaning of the readings. The children are then invited to share their own thoughts and ideas.
The children profess a simple Creed, offer their Prayers of Intercession, and return to their families at the time of the Presentation of the Gifts.
Leaders guide the Scripture service, reflection, and prayers at both the 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday Masses. Leaders are scheduled on a rotating basis, and detailed resources for preparation and reflection are provided. Previous teaching experience is not required—this is a ministry of faith-sharing rather than formal teaching.
