Centering Prayer & Lectio Divina

". . . But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you." MT 6:6

Centering Prayer is a method designed to facilitate the development of Contemplative Prayer. It is an attempt to present the teaching of earlier times in an updated form. The Christian contemplative tradition can be expressed as "resting in God" beyond thoughts, words, and emotions. This prayer is done while sitting comfortably with eyes closed as a symbol of letting go of what is going on around and within us. The minimum time for this prayer is 20 minutes. Two periods are recommended each day.

The principal fruits of centering prayer are experienced in daily life and not during the prayer period. Centering Prayer familiarizes us with God's first language which is silence.

Our weekly Centering prayer group meets every Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Chapel to encourage, support and share the spiritual journey. We 'Center' for 20 minutes, followed by offering verbal prayers and petitions to God.

Once a month (on the first Tuesday) a period of Lectio Divina is offered after Centering Prayer. Lectio Divina (Divine Reading) is a reflective reading of scripture that leads us into the deeper meaning of scripture and the transformation of our lives. It is a way of listening to the texts of scripture as if we were in conversation with Christ and He was suggesting the topics of conversation. There are moments of listening and pondering the chosen passage. It is listening with the "ear" of the heart.

If you are interested in learning more or would like to join our group, come to the Chapel on the First Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. or call the Parish Office to be put in touch with Barbara Main.
