Programs for the Children    ~   Programas para los niños

  • Educación Religiosa

El programa para la edución religiosa, grades 1 a 6, será en el Salon de San Francisco en Oceano, cada lunes y jueves, 5:30 a 6:30pm.

  • Faith Formation / Religious Education

Children in grades 1st through 6th meet on Tuesday afternoons from 4:00 - 5:15 at St. Patrick's School. First Communion is made in the 2nd grade and is a 2 year program so children need to start in 1st grade.

  • First Reconciliation & Holy Communion

The child must be registered and attend Religious Education Classes in order that he or she has “sufficient knowledge and be accurately prepared, so that according to their capacity they understand what the mystery of Christ means, and are able to receive the Body of the Lord with faith and devotion (Canon 913-914).  The child must make his or her First Reconciliation before being admitted to Holy Communion (Canon 914).  First Communion usually occurs in the 2nd grade, and in the Diocese of Monterey it is a 2 year process so children need to start in 1st grade.

  • Children's Catechumenate (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults for Children)*

The Children's Catechumenate program is designed for children who have reached the age of reason (deemed to be about the age of 7).  It is for children who have not received the Sacrament of Baptism.  Due to their age, and lack of the Sacrament of Baptism, according to Canon Law they are to receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, First Eucharist, and Confirmation).  This is a two year process that is based on the RCIA model.  If your child is missing any sacraments, please call to inquire if this program is for them. Again, this is a process of gradual formation and preparation for initiation into the church community, and it will involve the whole family.

*Parents must attend a preparatory class.  The child’s name is not to be foreign to Christian sentiment (Canon 855).  At least one parent must be a registered parishioner, active and practicing with the hope that the parent(s) will bring the child up in the Catholic Religion (Canon 868.1.2).  If not, the parent(s) must have some family connection or history with the parish.  There must be at least one godparent (sponsor); however, there may be two.  They must be active, practicing Catholics.  The sponsor(s) must be fully initiated (made their First Holy Communion and was Confirmed) and not less than 16 years of age – unless there is a just reason for the age. If there is only one godparent, this may be male or female.  If two, then they must be male and female. In the case of only one godparent (sponsor), a baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic ecclesial community may be admitted… simply as a witness to the baptism (Canon 874).

  • First Reconciliation & Holy Communion for Older Kids

These sessions are reserved for older baptized children, who for whatever reason have not yet received the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.  The same norms apply as noted above.

  • Children's Liturgy of the Word (C.L.W.)

All children, ages 5-11, are welcomed to attend this program; regardless of their Sacramental situation. There is no registration or commitment to sign up for this program.  We meet at the 9:00 and 10:30 Masses on Sundays.  The children are dismissed from Mass to the Chapel to hear the Sunday readings proclaimed in a language that they can understand, i.e. Children’s Lectionary.  They pray and reflect on the scriptures together, and discuss how they may implement the Gospel values into their daily lives.  We usually follow the school calendar in regards to holidays.
